about

I wrote ‘The Call’ in 2003 shortly after I got back from mission work in Peru. At the time I was doing missions training in South Carolina. The story of New Tribe Missionaries Gracia and Martin Burnham was what inspired me to write this one. They were missionaries in the Philippines, and they were kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and held for ransom. During a rescue attempt by the Philippine Army, both were shot and Martin was killed. This also opened my eyes to the Persecuted Church. And I wrote this song to open other people’s eyes to the needs of the Persecuted Church.

I continue to use this song to advocate the work of Voice of the Martyrs www.persecution.com at my concerts.

When it came time to record it, I was looking for a tribal sound similar to the sounds heard on Rich Mullin’s THE WORLD AS BEST AS I REMEMBER IT project. I first fell in love with Rich’s song "Sometimes By Step" – Steve Brewster did a wonderful job with the percussion on it. And it was great to have him do something similar on my song. I felt it’s what the song needed. I’m really happy with how this one turned out, and I think fans of Rich Mullins’ music will like it too.

Trina supported the Persecuted Church. I remember her telling me she read stories to her children in order to help strengthen their faith. Since then, Michelle and I started doing the same and continue to do so.

In one of her last posts on Facebook, she ended with these words: "I want to thank everyone immensely for all you've done for my family and I these past almost two and a half years. Thank you for your prayers, cards, words of encouragement, gifts, financial help, meals etc., it has all been a huge blessing. Please, those of you who have prayed for me, I ask that with that same eagerness you would pray for the church to love Christ and for the persecuted church...."
