25 years ago the late great Christian songwriter and ragged philosopher Rich Mullins went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This song was originally written as a tribute to Rich and based on the biopic film about his life RAGAMUFFIN.

It's a movie that focused on the messiness of his faith and his pursuit of God.

Mullins was honest about struggles with temptation, loneliness, and discouragement. Yet he never abandoned his faith nor did God stop pursuing him with His wreckless raging love.

He was a model of brokenness we could all identify with.

This was the focus behind this song. We can all identify with the guy in the movie, which is why so many of us identify with Rich Mullins. We are all Ragamuffins and Restless Pilgrims. We are broken, longing to be loved, and longing to be free. We all struggle with being human - in a war between the flesh and the spirit. We all have sins we try to hide and find we can't. We all want to know God more and be loved by the God who is love! We are all on that journey. That is the meaning behind this song! It's about being broken and fragile and desiring to be both Holy and loved by God.

As the Psalmist King David writes, "The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God." (Psalm 51:17 NLT)

As John Roginski and I were working on the "Trina" project, he suggested we include this song with the project. In many ways Trina was like Mullins. They both experienced brokenness in ways many of us can identify with, and they were honest with their struggles. Despite their struggles they never abandoned their faith, yet they clung to it even more. And both felt the love of God consume them and desired that others would come to know this love!
