about

Thomas explains, "Bartimaeus" was inspired by a sermon by Pastor Jim Walker at Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community in Pittsburgh PA. It poses the idea that Bartimaeus, not being able to see Jesus, had to have heard him in the crowd and stepped forward to yell for Jesus and trusted in his healing. He left his cloak behind, probably one of the only items he may have owned and likely clung to. He stepped out amongst the crowd in faith, despite his likely lowly place in society, likely surrounded by those who may have judged and despised him, being blind and having to beg on the street. The song considers leaving his cloak as significant - perhaps a possession that has gone from ‘security blanket’ to ‘wet blanket’ - keeping the fire for God unable to burn. What do we cling to in our lives that we see as ‘security blankets’ that have become our ‘wet blanket’? What do we need to step away from in order to truly step out in faith toward God and allow the fire to burn within our hearts?”
